Tested on past conferences
How often the right session is near the top
Each past General Assembly was replayed as if it were next year’s: the model learned only from earlier years, then ranked that year’s sessions for every abstract. A hit means the session the abstract was actually presented in appears within the first suggestions.
EGU26 · 20,858 abstracts · 786 scientific sessions · model trained on 2022–2024 only
| Conference | Trained on | Top 1 | Top 2 | Top 5 | Top 10 | Top 20 | Right session in shortlist | Typical shortlist length |

Historical assignments are imperfect labels: an abstract often fits several sessions equally well, so a “miss” is not necessarily a wrong suggestion. EGU27 has more candidate sessions than EGU26 (1,259 vs. 786) before organisers merge sessions, which makes the task slightly harder. Full method and evaluation →
How it works
Three steps, all on your device
- 01
Read your abstract
A compact language model turns your title and each passage of the abstract into semantic vectors, inside the browser.
- 02
Compare every session
Your text is compared with the title and description of every EGU27 scientific session, using a scoring learned from 68,000 past abstract–session assignments.
- 03
Get a calibrated shortlist
Clear-cut abstracts get a short list, interdisciplinary ones a longer one. Each result links to the official session page.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is this the official EGU abstract submission tool?
No. EGU27 Session Finder is an independent research tool by Mathieu Gravey. It only helps you shortlist sessions; you still submit your abstract through the official EGU27 call for abstracts on meetingorganizer.copernicus.org.
Is my abstract uploaded or stored?
No. The language model runs inside your browser. Your title and abstract are never sent to a server, logged, or saved; the site only downloads static files (the model and the session catalogue).
How accurate are the suggestions?
Each past conference was replayed as if it were the next one: the model learned only from earlier years. On EGU26 the session an abstract was actually presented in was the first suggestion for 32% of abstracts, in the top 2 for 46%, in the top 5 for 65%, and in the top 10 for 78%. Many abstracts genuinely fit several sessions, so read the descriptions before choosing.
Which EGU27 sessions are included?
All 1,259 scientific sessions of the EGU27 programme as published for the call for abstracts, including inter- and transdisciplinary (ITS) sessions. Short courses, Geo Panels, medal lectures, town halls, and similar events are excluded. Sessions can still be merged or withdrawn by the organisers, so always check the official programme.
When is the EGU27 abstract deadline?
The EGU27 abstract submission deadline is Tuesday 12 January 2027, 13:00 CET. The General Assembly takes place in Vienna and online from 4 to 9 April 2027.
Why do I get a different number of suggestions each time?
The shortlist length adapts to how clear-cut the match is. It is calibrated on EGU26, the most recent conference, so that it contains the session past authors actually chose about 80% of the time, typically with around 9 sessions.
Does it work on a phone or offline?
Yes. The first visit downloads about 35 MB (the compressed language model and catalogue); after that the files are cached and matching works even without a connection.
